The Laird Norton Family Foundation awards grants by invitation only.

We do not accept unsolicited applications for grants, though we do accept brief inquiries from organizations whose work is closely aligned with our priorities. However, only on very rare occasions does an invitation to apply for funding result from an unsolicited inquiry. If -- after thoroughly reviewing the information provided here on our website -- you believe your organization is a strong fit with our funding priorities, you may submit an inquiry form. Please be as specific as possible about how you see the fit between the work you do and our priorities. We will review all inquiries, but cannot respond to all due to the volume of inquiries we receive. Please do not call before submitting an inquiry form, or to inquire on the status of an inquiry form submitted.

Types of Support

The Foundation generally provides program or operating support, with approximately 30% of grant dollars awarded from 2007-12 designated as general operating support. The Foundation does not make multi-year commitments; however, we seek to develop strong partnerships with our grantees and will consider awarding multiple or successive grants to an organization. Between 2007 and 2012, approximately 40% of the Foundation's grantees received funding in multiple years.

The Foundation makes grants to organizations located within the United States qualified under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and classified as public charities (not private foundations) under Section 509(a). No grants are made to religious institutions for religious purposes. The Foundation does not fund individuals, scholarships, endowments, capital campaigns, for-profit organizations, or unincorporated associations or groups. We generally do not fund publications, documentary films, television productions and the like. Global Fundamentals grants to U.S. 501(c)(3) organizations support international programs.

In 2012, the Foundation made grants totaling $1,300,000. Please see our Program Area pages for information on recent grants.
