2017 Taproot Fund application
The Taproot Fund is the Laird Norton Family Foundation’s matching grant program. It is designed to encourage philanthropic giving among Laird Norton Family members to the nonprofit organizations of their choice. If you have questions, please contact LNFF staff Cadence Miller at
Please note: to submit an online Taproot Fund application, you will need an uploadable copy of the gift confirmation letter you received from the organization you supported. This online form will not allow submissions that omit any of the requested information.
About the Taproot Fund
The mission of the Taproot Fund is to nurture, support, and develop individual philanthropic giving across a wide range of charitable activities while encouraging collective family philanthropic collaboration, focus and commitment. The Taproot Fund is a “dollar-for-dollar”
“dollar-for-volunteer-hour-equivalent” matching program. Volunteer hour equivalent contributions will be matched at $20.00/hour up to 50 hours.
Individual and Household Eligibility
All Laird Norton Family members 14 years of age or older are eligible to participate. Eligible Family members may submit
Household cash contribution and/or volunteer-hour matching grant request. To qualify as a part of a Household contribution, a member of the Household (domestic partner, spouse or child) must have written the check and/or performed the volunteer-hour equivalent service and all the Family Members submitting the Household matching grant request must be eligible to take their portion of the tax deduction for their portion of the donation. Members of a Household requesting a matching grant for the same organization need only complete a single application form. Extended family members are encouraged to gift collaboratively to the same organization, but each Individual or Household must make a contribution to the organization to have it qualify for a matching grant. Matching grants may be given to the same organization in subsequent grant years.
Contributions and Matching Grant Amounts
Each eligible Laird Norton Family Member may request a match for
organization per person per year. The maximum matching cash and/or volunteer-hour equivalent grant is $1,000 per Laird Norton Family Member per year. Contributions must be in U.S. dollars or dollar equivalents. PLEASE NOTE: Applications are processed by the Laird Norton Family Foundation on a
, as soon as we receive all the necessary paperwork from the Family Member. (This is the application form
an acknowledgement of the gift or volunteer hours from a qualifying nonprofit uploaded.)
Incomplete applications will result in a processing delay
Eligible Nonprofit Organizations
The nonprofit organization receiving a matching grant must be a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. The following organizations are not eligible for matching grants from the Taproot Fund: i) Laird Norton Family Foundation; ii) Winona Foundation. Any nonprofit organization paying or reimbursing any Laird Norton family member or any of the above foundations for services must provide a letter clearly stating that both the Laird Norton family member’s contribution as well as any matching funds received from LNFF will not be used for the benefit of a Laird Norton family member; in addition, please let LNFF know if a Laird Norton family member is paid or reimbursed by this organization. Donations made at a member’s direction via the MSCCP do not qualify for matching grants from the Taproot Fund, nor do matching grants from other organizations or institutions made in the family member’s name.
Gifts made between November 1, 2016 and October 31, 2017 are eligible.
LNFF will continue to match family contributions until the fund has paid out $75,000 or until the October 31 deadline, whichever comes first.
The final date for submission of matching grant requests is October 31, 2017. No applications will be processed after that date.
